The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, supersonic long-range fighter capable of all-weather operation. It was originally designed as an on-board fighter equipped only with guided missiles, because at the time of its creation, it was expected that air battles will take place only at greater distances and the onboard cannon will not be needed. However, Phantom also proved successful in attacks on ground targets, or as a reconnaissance aircraft and an element of radio electronic warfare. In 1973, the Israeli Phantoms successfully participated in the Yom Kippur War. The F-4 Phantom II is also probably the most famous aircraft of the Vietnam War, where it was first deployed in combat in 1964. It served as the main fighter aircraft for the US Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps and at the end of the war became important in the role of ground attack and air reconnaissance. Thanks to knowledge from the war in Vietnam, the M61 Vulcan cannon was mounted on the F-4E version. This aircraft also got more powerful engines and newer radar.
