Similar in appearance to its predecessor, the EMD F3, the EMD F7 was a 1500hp multi-purpose locomotive. In 1972, in an effort to improve the visibility of their fright locomotives, the Santa Fe adopted a new yellow paint scheme reminiscent of the famous red and silver Warbonnet used on Santa Fe’s passenger locomotive from the previous decades. A variation of this scheme was also applied to some of the Santa Fe passenger F-7s that were leased to the then-new passenger startup Amtrak.
